LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) is the leading organisation delivering more sustainable food and farming. LEAF works with farmers, the food industry, scientists and consumers to inspire and enable sustainable farming that is prosperous, enriches the environment and engages local communities. LEAF promotes Integrated Farm Management (IFM), a whole farm business approach that delivers more sustainable farming.
LEAF also runs the LEAF Marque Global Standard recognising sustainably farmed products. It is based on LEAF`s IFM principles and helps farmers differentiate their products and demonstrate their environmental credentials. All LEAF Marque certified farms are independently inspected to ensure they meet stringent criteria to demonstrate that food is being produced to high environmental standards. These criteria include soil management and fertility, crop health and protection, pollution control and by-product management, energy and water efficiency, landscape and nature conservation, animal husbandry and community engagement. Farms in 33 countries worldwide are producing to the LEAF Marque Global Standard.
As well as helping farmers adopt more sustainable farming practices, LEAF also works to build public awareness of farming and what farmers do to protect and enhance the environment. Our flagship public engagement initiative is Open Farm Sunday which is held annually in June. Open Farm Sunday is the farming industry`s annual open day - a celebration of farming and food. A day when hundreds of farmers open their gates to welcome consumers onto farms to find out how their food is produced and the vital work farmers do to care for the countryside. Since Open Farm Sunday started in 2006, 1.6million visitors have visited a farm on Open Farm Sunday.
